News: New York Public Library starts lending digital formats

Posted in trifle on June 13th, 2005 by Summer Brooks

The NYPL is going digital:

The New York Public Library announced Monday that it is making 700 books from classics to current best sellers available to members in digital audio form for downloading onto PCs, CD players and portable listening devices.

“We are delighted to announce the availability of downloadable audio books as part of our circulating collection,” said Susan Kent, director and chief executive of the branch libraries. “Library users today are much more technologically sophisticated than ever; our aim is to continue to provide our users with free access to materials in whichever format they prefer.”

The service started Monday. Users can listen to digital audio books through a computer, burn them to CDs or transfer them to many portable devices, library officials said.

Digital audio books are available for free to members through the library’s Web site. Users can borrow up to 10 digital books at a time, and after 21 days the materials will be automatically checked in and made available to others.

Seems like three libraries in Alabama are also going digital.

Orange YarnMop Hair and the Cult of the Overzealous Fanboi (sarcasm intended)

Posted in trifle on June 13th, 2005 by Michael R. Mennenga

This is a topic I have been mulling over for several years. I will start by saying that I am an avid fiction and sci-fi fan and self professed geek. I love good stories. This is important enough that I will say it again. I love good stories. I will go to great lengths to find a good story. Movies, TV, radio, books, magazines, serials… it doesn’t matter. But heaven help you if you get between me and my imagination. I also like to write and create my own stories. But, and I can’t stress this enough, I am NOT a fanboi. I encourage everyone out there to dream and to enjoy the stories that capture the imagination.

Didja like Duel of the Fates?

Posted in trifle on June 10th, 2005 by Brian Brown

In case you missed it, we debuted (why does that look like ‘day-byoot-ed’?) a new Wingin’ It segment called Duel of the Fates. Here’s the supporting info from the creator:

Hello Wingin’ It! listeners! Jack Mangan here; I plan on doing one more exhibition Duel of the Fates segment (not saying yet who the combatants will be), then getting into the 8-character elimination tournament. The number one seed in that tournament will be the character “President William Sterling the Black”, from my forthcoming e-book and podiobook podcast, “Spherical Tomi”.

Live on XM Radio

Posted in trifle on June 10th, 2005 by Evo Terra

Well, I’ve seen it published on their website, so now I’ll go ahead and post official confirmation:

The Dragon Page Cover to Cover is now on XM Radio!

We’re on Sunday’s at 12:00 AM (midnight) EST, which makes it 9:00 Saturday night for those of you on the west coast. For our international listeners… doesn’t matter. You can’t subscribe to XM anyhow, so I don’t have to make a fool of myself trying to figure out the international date line. Tough enough having some listeners in this country listening on two different days.

Update: I’m an idiot. Told you I couldn’t figure out time zones. We’re on at 9:00 PM Sunday, wich is 12 Midnight on the east coast. Does that help?

If you’re an XM subscriber, you can catch us on Sonic Theater, Channel 163. And to all you new listeners who found us on XM, welcome!

Dragon Page Wingin’ It #14: Batman and Ripping Nipples

Posted in DPWI Shows on June 8th, 2005 by Summer Brooks

What’s on this week:

  • We have a new frontrunner in the “Name Summer & Joe” contest: Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas!
  • The guys consume the Erdinger Weissbier that Nina sent them, taking care to follow the instructions on how to pour them into the very cool glasses that came with the golden gift. Problems running the board ensue.
  • Michael & Evo are going to talk about seeing a sneak of Batman Begins… but not on this show. They are such teases, aren’t they?
  • Stormtrooper TD0013 In case you missed some, we are re-running “A Different Point of View.” (They are even better the second time around.)
  • Mur Lafferty (Geek Fu Action Grip) tells us about Rules, for gaming, for life, and just about anything else in between.
  • Duel of the Fates by Jack Mangan. This tongue-in-cheek segment will pit different characters from across the Sci-Fi board against each other in 7 silly categories. It’s a funnier variation on the column he writes for Beyond Infinity Magazine.
  • and Evo revels in having received permission from Warren Ellis to read “Ripping Yarns”. What is it with Evo and nipples?

The other side of Star Wars

Posted in trifle on June 8th, 2005 by Evo Terra

Magess sent me a couple of links in the last few days I’d like to share with the class.

The first is an alternate script for Epi III, one that George seems to have followed to the letter, only having the actors speaking slightly different words. Not safe for work, but it will make you (as it did me) rethink your adoration of the movie.

Then once you are thoroughly puzzled, check out the article on The Complex and Terrifying Reality of Star Wars Fandom. It might make some sense to you on a strange level. And if you’re not a SW fan, you’ll may gain a little insight as to the bizarre behavior of some of your friends.

    2005…The Year of DeSmedt

Posted in trifle on June 7th, 2005 by Tee Morris

You might think Bill DeSmedt is doing a happy dance over the IPPY Award for Best Science Fiction of 2005…

Folks, Bill’s about to dive into a mosh pit!

Singularity by Bill DeSmedt (per Aspera) is the winner for ForeWord Magazine’s Best Science Fiction of 2004!

And guess who will be joining him in the mosh pit…ME! Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword (you know, my book from Dragon Moon Press?) was given an Honorable Mention in the General Fiction category for ForeWord’s 2004 Book of the Year. I am thrilled!!!

Allright, guys…how about that “Winner’s Circle” show I proposed last time? ;^)

    Exercise your Inner Geek

Posted in trifle on June 4th, 2005 by Summer Brooks

Okay folks… time to break out your old Cubes, or go buy new ones, and start practicing for the 2005 Rubik’s Cube World Championships

How many people realized that this year was the 25th anniversary of the unleashing of the Rubik’s Cube on the world? I sure as hell didn’t realize it until earlier this evening.

I still have my original Cube, and yeah, it’s 25 years old. It’s way too fragile for me to play with it like I used to way back in high school (personal best time: 27 seconds. average time: 32 seconds).

I used to have the 4×4 Rubik’s Revenge, but I could never solve that one. I gave up trying long before the web as we know it existed… and I never knew they came up with a 5×5 beast. Wow.

Anyway, while I’m in no way considering entering this contest, I am waxing nostalgic enough to want to go buy a new 3×3 Cube. I kinda miss playing with it, solving it in an almost trance-like state. And part of me really does want to see if I can get back to breaking 30 seconds.

    tDP and SoSF half banners

Posted in trifle on June 2nd, 2005 by Evo Terra

Jeff over at Podcast Shuffle has listed our shows and was asking for a half-banner (234×60), a size I’m familiar with but not used to working with. I like how he’s using half banners, and thought others may jump on the bandwagon. So if you do and are looking to put up some of our graphics, here you go.

Use them as you will, link ‘em as appropirate. Have fun. And if you need other sizes, let me know.
