Dragon Page Wingin’ It #25: Responding to Voicemails

What’s on this week:
- This show is dedicated to responding to our many voicemails! It’s also chock full of good beer, which may pose a dilemma…
- Jack Mangan is in studio to suggest a new awards ceremony for best characters in literature
- What is the worst scifi movie ever?
- Scifi Poetry Slam!: TV Life by Robert G. Parent
- TD0013: A Different Point of View: Who Blew up Alderaan?
- Mike has a beer thief, and puts out the call for help in finding the bands who supplied music for the Dragon Page’s first year
- Voice of the Republic: the Trade Federation was played
- The fun of the con suite at Dragon*Con
- Mur Lafferty (Geek Fu Action Grip): Geek Fashion
- Mark From Memphis checks in
- A Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas update
Plus Chris is in studio, and all can experience a real-time listen to what happens when too much beer is consumed during a show, kinda like that one episode of WKRP in Cincinnati

Great show, folks! I just wanted to add my nomination for the worst movie ever: “Meet the Feebles.”
If you haven’t seen it (lucky you), it’s essentially a puppet-film that takes place in the seedy back-alleys of Sesame Street. That may sound cool, but it isn’t. I paid $1 to see that in college in 1998, and that’s about $5 more than I should have spent. I remember making a point at the end of the film to see who was responsible for such a celluloid travesty… “written and directed by Peter Jackson.” I almost shed a tear when I read he was directing “The Lord of the Rings” films. It took all three of those great movies for me to forgive Petey-Jack for “Meet the Feebles” and, my close-second for worst movie, “Dead Alive.”
Keep up the great work! I’m really enjoying the shows!

Wingcommander. That is all I have to say about the Worst Movie ever.

Manos: The hand of fate
Even the MST3k version is barely viewable. I think 2 people associated with this film killed themselves. Myabe just a myth, but having seen the movie, I believe it. ~Erithid

Does ‘The Island’ count? I haven’t seen it, but the reviews just rip into it.
Also, I can be available to look for those bands. You guys still have my address, right?

Let me get back from Dragon Con and I’ll see about getting the season #1 disk out to you. If you’re up for the challenge, I’ll certainly pass it on.

Do movies like ‘C.H.U.D.’ and ‘The Stuff’ count as Sci-Fi?
Personally I’d like to nominate ‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes II’. Yes, that derlict film that introduced George Clooney to the world. The man famous for killing that Batman saga.
WOW! I just notied that the show is 1 hour 17 minutes! Holy Sheep Poo, Batman! I may have to post a second time.

Haven’t listened to the show yet, but it definitely sounds like my flight from San Francisco to Atlanta will be interesting and that I will have strangers looking at me strangely (again).
Can’t wait to see you guys at Dragon*Con!!!

Hey guys,
Some comments on your beercasting.
As a former homebrewer and real ale snob I know a few things about beer. The German beer taste you recently refered to is from a type of hops known as Hallertauer. It has a very distinctive aroma and aftertaste. Evo will love it Michael will not. For Evo I suggest trying Pilsner Urquell from the Czech republic if you haven’t already. For Michael I recommend Fat Tire Ale http://www.newbelgium.com/beers_ft.php
For everyone I recommend Anchor Steam Liberty Ale and of course Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
If you just want to fall over drunk afterwards then try some Samichlaus:

I’ve had the pleasure of drinking Samichlaus before heading out for a night on the town. Believe me, it’s an evening ender.
Take care guys and gal.
The shows are great.

Oh man, The Stuff… I remember watching that when I was 10 and thought; ‘Yeah that was awesome! A film where people are zombiefied by yogart/ice cream stuff, then they go around throwing it up and it kills people. Great!’
Last year at Uni a few friends and I were discussing old horror films and I mentioned The Stuff. None of my friends had heard of it, so I briefly explained and they thought it sounded awesome. So we ordered it on DVD. Oh dear, about 9 years later watching it again wasn’t quite the same. Though the film was terrible we managed to enjoy it for its overacting, poor special effects and general rubbishness. If your going to watch it, make sure you watch it with friends so you have someone to make fun of it with.

As a bisexual male, Joe’s “dick” does nothing for me.

Wosrt Movie Ever: Showgirls.
See you guys at CopperCon! I wasn’t planning on going and then I realized it is four blocks away from my house!

John DeLeon, the soon we forget about that whole “dick” thing, the better.
John C. — Why haven’t you ever been by to the studio? Just bring some beer, and you’re a shoo-in.

Should you change the name of the show to Michael and Evo’s Drinking it?

Ghosts of Mars.

They could just do a new show that’s just a beercast. Michael and Evo’s Pub Crawl. Put up a site where they can rate what they drink as suitable for Mike or suitable for Evo.
I think because none of my geek friends are big drinkers, it does kinda make me look at the computer askance as I play the show.
So… if Summer is for the guys… and now Joe’s given his contribution for the other 10% of guys, what’s there going to be for me?

Welcome. I, High-Priest Chris from Des Moines, do hereby invite you to join the Cult of Summer in honor of Her Divine Geekiness. (If you don’t understand this, you will within the week) I do hereby proclaim and declaire that the Cult of Summer exists and will honor her Divine Geekiness every week. More often when possible.
First items of discussion will be our manifesto, the divinity or not of His Kick Assedness Joe, and why “Evo the False Geek” is to be reviled.
To join the Cult of Summer, simply send an email to cultofsummer-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. I, High Priest Chris from Des Moines, will be awaiting you.
(Sorry about using a Yahoo group, but I wanted to get it going before Mike and Evo got back from DragonCon, and this was the best I could do. We can discuss moving it later.)

Magess, tell me what works for ya, and I’ll see if we can’t work it into a show… subtle, we ain’t
September 8th, 2005 at 12:21 pm
Would you believe that this is actually the first time that I sincerely enjoyed listening to people getting drunk?!
I never expected such a thing to happen, but here I was: you guys had me in stitches :p

Jack Mangan mentioned a character named ‘Geb,’ or something like it. I’ve missed something; what book was he referring to? I need to catch up.
September 9th, 2005 at 11:53 am
Hey Ryan, I was referring to “Ged” from Ursula K. LeGuin’s “Earthsea” books. If a “Best Classic Character” award is established, then he’s gotta be on the short-list of nominees. Great character, great books, terrible Sci-Fi Channel miniseries.
September 9th, 2005 at 1:53 pm
Thank you, Sir! This shall be placed upon my Powell’s list with immediacy.

Hello all. I love your show.
You were talking about Stargate Atlantis on a recent show. I sort off agree with you its not as good as Stargate SG1 but I do think its better then Battlestar Galactica. I know you won’t agree to that but Battlestar is like a space soap opera to me. I just can’t watch it anymore. I have tivo so I have taped all the show but I need to be in the right frame of mind to see them. I have 9 episodes saved up now and I’m still not in the right mood.
By the way, you also talked about the wraith in Stargate Atlantis. He’s not still in jail. He got killed by a virus on another planet in episode called “Poisoning The Well.”
Hmm I’m American and I love Doctor Who. The episodes are easy to find I’m sure you can find it easily. If you need help finding the shows email me and i will help you.

You don’t like the new Battlestar?
Blasphemer!!
Oh, ok, if you really don’t like it, I guess we understand….
No, wait - Burn the witch!!!
(You like SG1 and Dr. Who so you can’t be all bad.)
