Podcast culling

Oh man… this was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in a long time. About an hour ago, I was subscribed to 116 podcasts. That’s one hundred sixteen podcast feeds. Not including the 10+ text only feeds. Podcasts. Yeah.

Now, that number is down to a more managable number of 70. Still, I’m betting that puts me higher than 95% of the rest of the podcast-aware population. (Note that does not include my cult cast, or the shows Mike and I do together. The seven Podiobooks.com titles to which I’m currently subscribed aren’t factored in either.)

I had to make some hard choices. For example, many shows that I like simply had to go because they were too long. Yeah, I know. Pot. Kettle. I got it. Hey, we’re trying. And no, that doesn’t mean I lost a really good show because it was long. I tossed out the things I don’t listen to on a regular basis and those which ceased to appeal to me. That got me below a hundred. Then the hard part came.

So… when you email me and say “please listen to my show”… have a heart.

Okay… so now you listen to fewer than I do. I’m at 85. I’ve managed to stay within a day or so for the last couple of weeks… I usually drop a day during the weekend and then spend the week catching up. Admittedly, when I get behind, I drop 3, and just have the more manageable 82.

I just know that I’m missing a bunch of new, good shows. I should try and cull some of mine as well… but I chose them. How can I unchoose them? It feels like yanking nose hairs. It hurts like hell and makes me cry… and usually gives me some kind of nose zit, too. And I don’t deliberately want to cause myself PodNose zits… I don’t think this analogy is working anymore.

    Congratulations on facing your task.

That’s still a lot of freaking podcasts. I have no idea how you find the time. That’s got to be like 70 hours straight. 3 days straight? Good lord!

  3. Pilitus Says:

That’s not really so long. I probably manage to listen to around 35 or so hours of podcasts a week. Which is why I’m always trying to find new shows, or long shows. And why I celebrate the addition of almost an hour and a half to the draco-vista studio’s lineup.

I don’t have ENOUGH podcasts to listen to! I just counted after reading your post and I have 23. Two of those are audiodramas that don’t update very often. One is videocast that I only watch at home. Several of the others are only 20-30 minutes long. I work at a mindnumbing data entry job, so I burn through all my podcasts by Wednesday. Perhaps I should take some time this weekend to test-drive a few shows.

I was starting a new podcast and would like your opinion…

I love podcasting so much I started my own about a month back. Ironicaly this has detracted from my podcasting listening time as the time I spend fussing over the blog and podcast cuts into it.

Evo I don’t know how you manage to do as much as you do but thank the intelligent designer that you can.

  7. Brad Bowyer Says:

Wow Evo that’s a LOT of podcasts! I thought I had a bunch with 35 or so. How’s about posting a list? I’m always looking for good stuff to listen to.

  8. Tee Morris Says:

I’m astounded to hear this because while I was away, Evo managed to get me turned on to at least two podcasts. I think my aggregator is up to a paltry twenty or twenty five, but these aren’t the tiny five-to-ten minute podcasts. Oh no…these are the thirty minute-and-up podcasts. And let’s talk about my podiobook subscriptions! And did I mention I’m WAY BEHIND in my own podcast productions? *groan* (A new SGWF is on the way…)

In all seriousness, E does know how to pick ‘em. I got turned on to Tracy and Laura Hickman’s podcast, and DragonHearth rocks!

But yes…I’m trying to keep it in check. Otherwise, I’ll have to join an intervention group. Hmm…a podcast about listening to too many podcasts…there’s an idea…

Holy crap I am a freak. I listen to a 100 active feeds and read nearly fifty blogs. I do have a boring job that lets me listen to almost twelve hours a day for three days straight. I am constantly adding in feeds and swapping out ones that bore me or have pod-faded. I am sill looking for more shows, I want more media.

  10. C.A. Sizemore Says:

    Thanks Evo, three more shows.
