New Ways to Interact with Dragon Page Fans

Honestly, it’s starting to get a bit overwhelming. No, really, I’m feeling it. Right here. For real.

First, there was a clamoring to hear “Wingin’ It” via a live stream, in all it’s unedited glory. Skype is handling the load for now, but I have a feeling other solutions will present themselves very soon.

Mike Wills took the lead and started up a Dragon Page Fans mailing list.

And now, to enhance the chatting that goes along with the stream, I’ve decided to forgo the Skype chatroom in favor of something more centralized and easier to use globally. After all, that’s what IRC was created for, right? And everyone can be in there chatting, whether or not a show is being recorded.

For those savvy with the chat networks, there’s a new channel out there. Point your irc client of choice to

irc.freenode.net

and hop into channel

#wingin_it

That’s all you need to do. The channel will be there 24/7, and will eventually have a beer fridge bot monitoring the room and taking drink requests (if Chuck sends me the code). Keep in mind, however, that irc tech has evolved on quantum levels since the last time I was a regular user, so if there are any other irc savvy listeners out there, feel free to send me suggestions.

Is this easy to do if you are only somewhat savvy? Can it be explained in small words? Or is it easier just go the Skype route?

  2. JohnBoze Says:

Are there any freeware IRC clients out there, particularly for mac?

Skype chat was kinda nice for that whole free aspect…

Here are some links that might help folks get set up with IRC:

    http://www.mirc.com/
    http://www.irchelp.org/
    http://www.xchat.org/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat

    see y’all there!

  4. Summer Says:

    What Brad said.

IRC started out as a Unix thing, which meant that it was implied to be free.

I had poked around at macupdate.com for clients, but ended up using XChat-Aqua on my Mac, for which there is a link on the xchat.org downloads page.

Ok this is the first time ive tried IRC (I grabbed the Firefox extension ChatZilla)

I found my way into the wingin it channel, but this was one of the first things that appeared at me:

[INFO] This channel requires that you have registered and identified yourself with the network’s nickname registration services (e.g. NickServ). Please see the documentation of this network’s nickname registration services that should be found in the MOTD (/motd to display it).

Im just wondering if I need to go register somewhere or am I set?

  6. Jeremy from Seattle Says:

A Key note: type /join #wingin_it to join.

  7. Jason C. Says:

Thanks I got in. that message just confused me, I thought I would have to go register somewhere.
    All is fine now. thanks.

  8. Brian from Winnipeg Says:

Darn, seems work is blocking irc traffic… I’ll have to try again while at home.

Jason, I’m trying that ChatZilla out - I really don’t want to download mIRC, or Trillian or something like that. From what I can tell, it looks pretty good!

Thankfully this time around (getting into IRC) I am not in University and therefore my grades/assignments will not suffer!!

Sorry for the double posting… My submit page had the error:

“Comment Submission Error - Wrong or missing Security Code”

So, I entered the code again and submitted… I wonder why it tells me there was an error, but it posted correctly anyway? Anybody else encounter this? (Yes, I only hit the Post button once - well twice, once orginally, second time after I got that error).

In the future, I’ll check the thread when this happens before ‘trying’ to post again…

  11. Magess Says:

Summer, it wants you to register your nick. You do this by typing /msg nickserv register

Then, any time you log on, you have the program automatically send /msg nickserv id and it’ll prove that you’re you.

  12. Brian from Winnipeg Says:

    Some nickserv commands:

/msg nickserv help (gives you a list of all COMMANDS)
/msg nickserv help COMMAND (gives help on that COMMAND)

/msg nickserv reg[ister] PASSWORD (register your current NICKNAME with a PASSWORD, nobody else can use that nickname unless they identify themselves with the password - this is good so people don’t pretend to be others - although that ‘can’ be funny)

/msg nickserv id[entify] PASSWORD (when you log on with/or change to a NICKNAME that is registered, you will be channeled on the PASSWORD for that nickname, this is the command you use)

  13. Wyrd Says:

    Hello.

Is there something somewhere on the page that indicates when you’re taping a given episode of Wingin’ It?

  14. Bronzethumb Says:

I’ve never used an IRC client before, and all I can say is “HELP!”. I’ve got mIRC up, but I can’t connect to a server or the channel.

  15. JohnBoze Says:

Fear not, Bronzethumb. It’s not you it’s the server.

Freenode was under attack this afternoon. (For my own highly questionable theories about this check out the Fan Group)

For a good part of the day they were severely limiting access. Things should be more back to normal soon.

  16. jradebaugh Says:

Can anyone post the time for the live stream? Is it done through skype?

  17. Simon Davies Says:

I was wondering what software i could use to make this conection, free would be good.
