Beer un-recommendation

I’ve been a fan of Four Peaks Brewing Company ever since the Highland Games episode of the show a few weeks/months back. In fact, the DarkCon party I attended at LepreCon32 was stocked with a keg of Kilt Lifter, a most excellent brew.

Too bad I can’t say the same thing about their 8th Street Ale. I bougth a sixer of it over a week ago and have just finished the last one tonight. Unispring doesn’t cut it. It’s bitter, but in a skunky way, with little aroma, a harsh mouth feel and no other redeeming qualities.

If your run-in with Four Peaks has been of this variety, I implore you to forget you ever drank the 8th Street, and give the Kilt Lifter a try instead.

  • Is Unispring similar to Bispring?

Thanks for the update. I really like Kilt Lifter.
Ill stay away. Bless your wisdom.

  • I’ve gotta chime in on this one…Four Peaks is as close as I’ve gotten to a “Cheers”-style hang-out place, and I’m a huge fan of their beers. The 8th Street has never been on the top of my list (which goes: Raj IPA, Hop Knot American Pale Ale, Kiltlifter, and whatever seasonal specialty they have on tap…OK, it doesn’t even MAKE the list!), but in its defense, I’ve noticed one thing about their beer: six-packs purchased anywhere other than the brewery are hit-or-miss freshness-wise. I bought a stale six of Kilt Lifter for an SoB tasting, and if that’d been my first, I’d be waving everyone away from that beer (which, when fresh, is indeed excellent). Not to be an appologist, cuz taste is taste, but I’d recommend swinging by the brewery or the tap room for a fresh pint before passing final judgement on this one.

I’m trying to be more educated about beer lately. In KC I really liked Boulevard’s Unfiltered Wheat. I’ve been trying to find something close to it here in AZ. Belguim’s Wheat is close but I find Fat Tire pretty uninspiring. I’ve had Bass in a bottle that was good and Bass on tap that was skunky.

The Oatmeal Stout rocks, just FYI. I think Michael would really like it.
