Liquid threat neutralized, TSA bans snakes on a plane

Posted in trifle on August 15th, 2006 by Evo Terra

This latest action from the TSA came across my news reader this morning:

NO SNAKES OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED ON A PLANE. SNAKES ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all pythons, boas, rattlesnakes, vipers, mambas, adders, and other known species of snakes.

Gee, it sure looks official. You might want to keep reading…

Oh, wait, here they are. Our in-studio audience this week is Chris the cheesecake lady, and Debbie from East Mesa.

We need beer money, people! Seriously, that’s not a lie. See that number at the bottom of the post? Call it with your credit card in hand.

Skepticality returns!

Posted in trifle on August 14th, 2006 by Evo Terra

Three irrefutable facts of the universe:

  1. When waiting for my food at a restaurant, if I get up to use the washroom, my food will be delivered

  2. If I get my car washed, it will rain the very next day
  3. If I remove a podcast from my listing of shows because it’s been nine months since their last update, they will announce the end of their hiatus the very next day

Welcome back to Skepticality. Congrats to Derek and Swoopy not only on their return, but also on being named the official podcast of Skeptic Magazine!

The next time someone asks me how they can make money with their podcast, I’m going to explain to them the Colanduno Method. ;)

Evo Devo

Yeah, I know what you are thinking. So was I. But we were both wrong. Really.

Someone buy me this book. It looks really friggin’ cool. Since I know one of you will, you might want to check the comments to see if someone has already stepped up to the plate.

And I love it when someone well versed in science tries to write compelling copy. The results are often hilarious and usually unintelligible. Here’s how one online journal is pushing it:

The essential path of adaptive evolution is that genetic variation among individuals is translated by the process of development into phenotypic variability, which is then screened by natural selection for any design changes that enhance survival and reproductive success.

But the cover looks cool! (And this sort of stuff is right up my alley…)

Pseudopod - The Horror Podcast Magazine

Posted in trifle on August 11th, 2006 by Evo Terra

Repeat post from the Dragon Page, but I can’t type out “fucking” over there!

Mur Lafferty and Ben Phillips have teamed up with Escape Artists, Inc. (the folks behind Escape Pod, the science fiction podcast magazine) to create Pseudopod — bringing you great original works of short horror fiction to your MP3 player of choice each and every week.

Their first offering is by none other than the master of splatter-fiction in the podosphere, Scott Sigler - author of the podiobooks Earthcore, Ancestor and Infection. This story is called Bag Man:

I swallowed. I didn’t want this to happen. I knew the game. Bag Man always called the cops and gave them a code. He gave that same code to the victim. Even after two years of killings, the fucking cranks were still calling 9-1-1, claiming the Bag Man had called them and that they needed protection. His codes solved that problem. He was a damn courteous kid.

Thing was, the codes became more of a warning to the cops than a way to separate out the sick, attention-starved loonies. The cops wanted to confirm Bag Man’s targets — not so they could stop him, but so they could stay the hell out of his way.

Get your buns ass over there and subscribe. Now. Not safe for the kiddies, obviously. Congrats to Mur, Ben and Steve on filling up yet another slot on my iPod. Guess I’ll just go to be even later now!

An immature Darth Vader

I’m literally crying right now…

Annotated version

Posted in trifle on August 3rd, 2006 by Evo Terra

Hey there. It’s me. Remember me? Yeah, relax. I be in the studio this Saturday, so quit you whining.

I’ve got another idea that I’ve decided to put forth to you, the Rabid Fans, rather than presenting the idea to Mike and the crew. Par for the course, no?

After listening to some back episodes (I’m behind), I noticed that we don’t always do a good job of ’splaining who certain people are and what their association to the show might be. All the Rabid Fans get the references, but nubes most certainly do not. My idea is simple — but the execution will not be: take the audio file and add in some “annotations” when we make any and all references which need some additional information. Don’t go overboard, but add in, in your voice, the data which we missed so that a new person will enjoy the show.

If this works, I’d entertain the idea of creating two different show links, or making some sort of announcement up front that nubes should grab a different file, or at least refer to the reference file if they get lost. Then again, this may be a lark and suck major wind. If so, it dies.

Wingin’ It #70

Mike, Jack, Joe, Charlie, and Rhettro delight and entertain us this week. What’s with Joe’s pre-pubescent voice-cracking?

First Drink of the Day: Stone Pale Ale (you’ve heard of the Stone Brewing Co., right?) Thank you, Karen.

Joe introduces what he hopes will become a Wingin’ It beer-opening tradition.
