Wingin’ It #78: Charlie has his “Wash Dies” moment
This week, we bring you Mike, Summer, Charlie, and Jack.
First Drink of the Day: Bard’s Tale Dragon’s Gold from Flying Bison Brewing
- And on this show:
- Summer tells a pseudo-mur joke.
- Lots and lots of comments on the beer.
- Big things happenin’ at Speaking of Beer. Apparently, The Beer Report shit all over Charlie’s podcast. On the plus side, his audience grew a bit as a result. So, we love these guys, right?
- Get Your Geek Off: Does your penis say to-may-toe, or to-mah-toe?
- A Haiku Moment: Testicle Discourse
- More kilt wedgie and thong discussion. Ok, I have to interject here. Mike, what the hell is the difference between a thong and a g-string?
- Scott Sigler never orders the macho combo!
- Rebeer! with the Northcoast Brewing Company: PranQster, Old Plow Share Stout, and another one I can’t spell or find.
- Summer brings science fiction back to Wingin’ It, just for a moment. There’s going to be an animated Space Balls television series.
- Are you a credits watcher?
- Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp is now on DVD.
- Discussion about some shows I was too young to watch: H.R. Pufnstuf, and Lidsville.
- Scifi Poetry Slam: The Future, by ???
Next week, Mike and Evo will be out at the Portable Media Expo. Should be a live show from there.

Wow, weird. It appears that I am the first poster. Who woulda thunk it. Kinda sucks about the whole Beer Report thingy. I am glad to hear that Charlie is taking it in hand. Guys like that piss me off. They remind me of the jocks in high school (way back when). The ironic thing is that they are podcasting. Back when I was in highschool, the jocks would never come anywhere near a computer. That was reserved for the geeks and nerds, and was considered as way beneath them. Who knows. Maybe in another 20 years they will be gaming.
September 27th, 2006 at 4:28 am
Congrats to Charlie for being the better man.
September 27th, 2006 at 5:38 am
If you’d like to hear the Beer Report get the “treatment,” check out “The Real Happy Hour” Epispde 18 (the most recent one). TRHH plays a “clip” from TBR and has at it. It’s pretty hilarious…
September 27th, 2006 at 6:06 am
Oh, the other North Coast Beer was Cru D’Or. It’s pretty tasty.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:06 am
Boy those guys actually thought they were cleaver. LOL Must be beer envy.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:21 am
Were cleaver as in beaver? Must learn to proof read.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:34 am
No idea what you guys are talking about yet…but I just wanted to post.
Ok.
Well that was a D’enouement.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:45 am
Oh…there’s a PodWar…let’s git it on!
There is a BIG difference with what WI says about others and most of time it’s a lovefest. You guys have your moments but it’s in good taste, those guys are SOB’s Like Summer said, WI does NOT outright criticize people directly. That’s just mean and stupid. It sounded like these idiots…well they’re just idiots. Kudos to Charlie….and Karen, try not to rip their heads off. You all rock!
September 27th, 2006 at 9:00 am
BTW, I had an ex-girlfriend that only ordered Guinness. So those “Beer Report” pussies don’t know what they’re talking about. HA! =P
September 27th, 2006 at 9:18 am
Dude! Seriously.
Women order Guiness all the time in Seattle.
I read your comment on their board, Charlie, well done.
September 27th, 2006 at 9:19 am
Hey,
It just came to me… this is a beer [shameless plug] Fanboy Smackdown [/shameless plug]
September 27th, 2006 at 9:21 am
The TBR shit is so stupid and unlistenable it is ridiculous. Aren’t they clever? They’ll tell me what to drink? Ha. At least Charlie puts information out and lets me decide. I’d much prefer to listen to Charlie.
September 27th, 2006 at 9:50 am
I am a credits watcher.
Mike: So, what are those “casting” names that you were talking about? I’d be interested in finding out.
September 27th, 2006 at 10:07 am
The reason those guys don’t know what women order is because they’ve never actually been near one.
Great job Charlie on being the cool dude!
September 27th, 2006 at 10:11 am
Doz! How dare you say that! Youre a “geek” remember!!! You dont “get girls either”!!!!
Whatta buncha fucks…. tho it was oddly entertaining hearing them spew insult after unthoughtout insult.
Besides, Im the only one allowed to call Charlie a “fuck”
September 27th, 2006 at 10:13 am
Wait… theyre the “bad boyz” of beer casting…
Oh God… I gotta get into beer casting…
September 27th, 2006 at 11:25 am

September 27th, 2006 at 11:33 am

…uh…that’s all I had to say…
September 27th, 2006 at 11:40 am

September 27th, 2006 at 1:26 pm
Isn’t that Fuck fuckity fuck?
September 27th, 2006 at 1:34 pm
Got your back in the UK Charlie, those guys dont know nuffink, guv’nor. Bad Boys of Beer Podcasting my arse, more like giggling little boys who pass out after a lager shandy and sleep on a stack of porn. Okay who doesnt. But anyway they’re just Ignorant Barstewards. All the good women drink guinness. Love the show guys and gals, fairly new fan here.
September 27th, 2006 at 1:40 pm
Charlie, regarding the rebeer and Jack, “it may be better from a glass”, beer is ALWAYS better from a glass unless it’s something you don’t wanna smell, like Bud
You are dead to me Charlie.
September 27th, 2006 at 1:43 pm
I agree with Patman, WI hardly ever attacks anyone except Alvie because he’s a “Fuckity fuck fuck!!!!!!”
September 27th, 2006 at 1:58 pm
Tom, thanks for the good words from across the pond!
Thomas:
URggghfarglegrrr…brrrrrrainsssss…

September 27th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
“Doz! How dare you say that! Youre a “geekâ€? remember!!! You dont “get girls eitherâ€?!!!!”
Thanks a lot for reminding me Alvie…

September 27th, 2006 at 2:05 pm
My wife orders Guinness when she goes to a bar, heck, that was the only thing she drank when we went to pubs when we were in Ireland.
Maybe they’re just looking for women in the wrong places.
September 27th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
They are from IL, maybe it’s tougher to find good women there besides Andrea obviously.
September 27th, 2006 at 2:14 pm
no doz no doz no doz!!!!!!!!!! gun down doz I was being facetious! no doz no!!
September 27th, 2006 at 2:30 pm
Jihad against beer report!
September 27th, 2006 at 2:49 pm
Durka Durka, Mohamed Jihad.
September 27th, 2006 at 3:06 pm
Durka Durka, Mohamed Jihad
Love that movie. Seriously though, these guys seem to trash everyone. They do it because they don’t actually know as much about beer as charlie does
September 27th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
I thought Charlie talked about this on the show, but I definately have with him in person, about the difference between a Beer Geek and a Beer Snob.
They seem to fall into the Snob category which is fine and good, but can cloud their vision towards beer.
I get that impression after listening to a show and reading the forum where he interacted with them and their comments on Shiner Bock.
September 27th, 2006 at 3:53 pm
For the record, I’m not a gamer.
And I don’t really drink a lot of beer.
But I love Charlie.
Even if I don’t understand half the shit he says. He’s just a nice guy. What’s an IPA?
September 27th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
To late Alvie…to late…
September 27th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
*ahem*
Debbie, an IPA is a catastrophic event that can occur during vigorous sexual congress. The acronym stands for “intra-penile aneuryism” and is marked by violent gouts of blood issuing from…
…what..?
…it’s a kind of BEER?
You know, someone should do a podcast to clear that misunderstanding up…
September 27th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Go on, Mr. Ghost…what are you dedicating to “late Alvie”?
September 27th, 2006 at 4:32 pm
To be fair, it was actually Greg from Craft Beer Radio who recorded the parody of the skit. Charlie has admitted that the skit was… well, it was easy to make fun of. Typically you would not send a Guiness drinker to try Shiner Bock, which is really an American Amber. Groucho and CHUD grow on you - you should subscribe to their podcast.
September 27th, 2006 at 4:40 pm
d00d, the CBR parody is on SoB, and yes it’s pretty hilarious. Wingin’ It got 100% pure unadulterated Groucho and CHUD. Deep into their show, if you know what I mean…
September 27th, 2006 at 6:56 pm
I resent that remark Charlie… We are anything but deep!
Hey everyone… Thanks for all the kind words! I kinda expected to have this kind of response! You all are very loyal to Charlie and to the Far Point Media crowd!
For the record, we always apologize during the next show for grievances stated on the previous program. Our next show will be no different. Charlie has corrected my sorry ass on several items that we slammed him for… So, we now know, that being drunk and jumping to conclusions with 1/2 the information is a problem. Next time, we will be drunk with 1/2 the info…. But stay away from the conclusions!
Looking forward to hearing this show, it will be my first, I love hearing us get beat down like lowly dogs!
Groucho
PS, If anyone every calls me up to invite me to a CoC game using pre-D20 rules (I hate the new San. rules)… I am there! So much for the Jock theory!
September 27th, 2006 at 7:41 pm
WTF? The show is supposed to be a love fest when I’m not there! And you guys pick a fight with another podcast? Fuck, fuck FUCKITY FUCK! I feel so marginalized…
(maybe I should listen to this show and see what it’s all about?)
September 27th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Groucho, GOD DAMN IT!!! HOW CAN YOU STEAL OUR THUNDER LIKE THAT!!!
Crap. I’ll just go drink a beer.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Hey Groucho!
I think it is very cool that you are here to respond to us. This shows good character on your part and I will be checking out the show because of it.
If we start taking ourselves too seriously, there is always someone that will knock us back in place.
Here’s too having fun, drinking beer and podcasting.
You guys are ok in my book.
September 27th, 2006 at 8:49 pm
You don’t want to mess with Charlie. Not only is he THE beer guy, he’s got a posse.
But, after listening to the latest Diggnation, it seems that Kevin Rose needs a bit of schooling.
September 27th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
I just downloaded the beer report. It sucks.
September 27th, 2006 at 9:57 pm
Let me get this straight. These guys were ripping on gamers, but one of them knew what THAC0 meant. Methinks they doth protest too much.
September 28th, 2006 at 5:14 am
CtBG - good on you for being the better man. Those Beer Report tossers need to learn some manners.
September 28th, 2006 at 6:05 am
Er… ok. I just downloaded a show. I’m with you Charles. This show is not Farpoint quality and they need a bit of direction. (And an engineer)
It’s still cool they are taking the bashing well, but I’m not subscribing.
September 28th, 2006 at 7:42 am
I haven’t listened to the show, but to be fair, the guys don’t pretend to be anything other than what they are on the snip we heard. Just look at the disclaimer on their website:
http://www.thebeerreport.com/
From CHUD: “I just realized I have almost no memory of doing this show. I kind fo remember the rant but not really. I don’t remember what the beers taste like at all. When was this? Shit, can’t wait until my lunch break to listen.”
Their target audience is obviously college age rowdy beer drinkers and they cater to that style. So, kudos to them, though the sensless bashing of Charlie is not something I condone.
And I doubt that any of us are really taking this seriously.
September 28th, 2006 at 8:07 am
Yeah, my first responce was “go post a sound thrashing,” but after checking out their site, seeing Charlies responce, and even Groucho posting here, it is unnecessary. Better to make friends than get all pissy!
September 28th, 2006 at 8:15 am
How could we dislike anyone that gets drunk and then speaks their mind?
September 28th, 2006 at 9:26 am
Interesting. I had heard that there was a new trend of podcasters attacking other members of the community, I think Mur Lafferty did an essay about the phenomenon, but hadn’t come across an example before.
I can’t recall ever hearing anyone from Farpoint media be anything other than supportive and encouraging of other podcasters. Constructive criticism yes, but always encouraging.
How strange to hear this attack but respect to Mr Groucho for sobering up and posting here.
September 28th, 2006 at 12:57 pm
PodWar I say! ….okay never mind. That was big of Groucho but don’t diss on Charlie!
*group hug*
September 28th, 2006 at 4:29 pm
“Er… ok. I just downloaded a show. I’m with you Charles. This show is not Farpoint quality”
Correct, they’re EverClearChannel Communications quality. Listen, or else.
Cheers!
September 28th, 2006 at 6:07 pm
I just checked out the beerretard website, it seems they pride themselves on being jackasses. A lamer version of the Jerky Boys with beer instead of telephones. I’ll pass.
September 28th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
Hey party people. So this is where the upscale podcast listeners/beer drinkers hang out. Cool. I’m used to hanging out with those college age rowdy beer drinkers over at The Beer Report so this will be a BIG change. But what the hell, I’ll rise to the occasion.
So how come everyone posts here when you guys have a perfectly good forum?
September 28th, 2006 at 10:24 pm
I believe it’s a force of habit, from before there was a forum. Just haven’t made that final leap yet…
Before reading the comments, I was ready to rail on TBR. Now I’m clam and content that everyone is on amiable terms for the moment, so I’ll hold my peace.
My plate is full with other active podcasts, and I don’t believe I need more beer related ones beyond WI (sorry, Charlie!) if I am to have a hope in hell of getting around to listening to them, even with Sigler’s books waiting on the side.
I am concerned over this mentioned trend of podcast bashing, though. I know PCH pokes fun at Diggnation once in a while, but that’s in fun. And I’m fully behind Nemcoff’s opinion of Keith and The Girl. Just NO. However, I also found myself bored of Dawn and Drew about 12 eps in. The point is, everyone has likes and dislikes, but they don’t have to be dicks about it.
September 28th, 2006 at 11:46 pm
Good quote Mark A: “The point is, everyone has likes and dislikes, but they don’t have to be dicks about it.”
And that’s where I have to agree with you. We are all looking for a new and more solid dimension in entertainment. It might come from multiple sources. Yet we all agree that today we least have a choice of independent and talented individuals taking the time to put out things that they believe in. Be it the good CHUD and his good brother Groucho over at the beer report or our good friend Charlie over at Speaking of Beer. We all agree that there is a definite need for some serious entertainment in terms of our common libation: Really good fucking beer. (and this Sci Fi thing-don’t want to go full on Geek yet, I’m on a rant).
Now then, lets agree that we all are ALL working towards that common goal. I throw down the challenge. I throw down the challenge to all of you with a gripe or a bitch to come on over to The Confrontation Board at The Beer Report and spew whatever grievence’s you have and all of us will listen and respond in a well thought out manner. But, cut out this anonymous bullshit. I am here as me, not some bullshit guest.
Seriously. Its easy to throw insults to each other it takes an adult to make amends. Lets get together, drink some good beers and have a good time. The Beer Report Forums have at least five alcohol related podcasts along with them. I may be biased, but they are all entertaining. Combine that with the others that you listen to, and we got ourselves a righteous party.
In conclusion I say Cheers and hope to party with you soon. More to follow on that.
Any questions you want to privately ask me, make a leap to YOUR forum here with Mike and EVO and email me.
CHEERS,
BuBBy!
September 29th, 2006 at 8:34 am
So how come everyone posts here when you guys have a perfectly good forum?
That’s a good question. People used to post there.
But, cut out this anonymous bullshit.
I agree. Then again, you have your rabid fans and we have ours. Most of us aren’t too bothered about this. We are all here to have fun.
In conclusion I say Cheers and hope to party with you soon.
All right!!! Let’s break out the booze!
Cheers!
September 29th, 2006 at 9:38 am
I protest!!!!!!!! My last name is NOT ‘bullshit”!!!!!!!
And why you wanna cut me out? Im just as valid a member as this community as anyone else. Curse you!!!!!!1111one1!
September 29th, 2006 at 9:39 am
Anonymous is right….
Please do not sully our good name.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:40 am
I tend to agree with Anonymous, but I take umbrage with Anonymous…
My last name is, in fact, “Bullshit”.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:52 am
Hey Anonymous, I know your brothers Steaming Pile Of and Complete and Utter!
September 29th, 2006 at 10:53 am
Wow. You all are some kind of loyal. Props to that. You’re also some kind of confused and misled it seems. What Michael and Evo have to do with this is beyond me, “the skit” was clearly not aimed at them and was clearly well deserved. Seriously, the whole messianic feel it had in the middle was awkward on a good day. Not to mention the use of the “The” beer geek in his title, that is pretentious by any standard - I want to call Charlie “Neo”, and I mean that in a kind of good way.
That said, I have listened to SoB from show one and somehow don’t find any trouble enjoying his show as well as TBR, DN, TRHH, etc. They are all different and often equally frustrating for a beer enthusiast like myself. It seems like you are all trying to find meaning in beer, whereas the other side of the beercasting world focuses on blind enjoyment of the beverage. I love it! Beer is a wonderful thing in this way, it has historical and regional values that cannot be ignored, but in the end it is a beverage that is made to be enjoyed. I think, by looking at these comments, you seem to take yourself way too seriously - either that or I am just reading this into the comments, a high probability. Do yourselves a favor, look at the confrontation board for the rips given to TBR and others. Then notice the replies. Groucho and CHUD, for all the love they seem to be lacking in their lives, are very good natured about the way they take rippers. They dish it out as well as they take it.
Groucho and CHUD have a show completely different than SoB and they appeal to a different type of beer fan, but don’t confuse this with quality of product. I am a brewer. I am a beer judge. I am a beer writer. I am ‘a’ beer geek. I will continue to listen to Charlie’s nerdy essays and ramblings while also listening to TBR as they offend anything and everything that comes to their minds. I will listen and enjoy.
Charlie, good representation on both boards. Groucho, you too.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:56 am
Me just likey beer… me no care who fight who… ug thud…
September 29th, 2006 at 10:57 am
Great… way to represent the anonymous community Anonymous…
…fucking idiot.
Well said pb_rick.
Charlie I have no brothers… I think youve mistaken me for Anonymous.
September 29th, 2006 at 11:31 am
Hey everybody!
I have to say one thing…This whole “Podcast Pugilism” thing has done nothing but create foamy goodness for everyone’s download numbers so now let’s all play nice and subscribe to one another’s streams and sing kumbaya…shall we?
Here’s to making new friends and hearing about new podcasts however we happen upon them!
Cheers!

Regarding: “Get Your Geek Off: Does your penis say to-may-toe, or to-mah-toe?”
Where’s the first part of this series? You said there was a female side of the conversation? I was looking at recent episodes and didn’t find it. Thanks in advance.
September 30th, 2006 at 10:09 am
Hey d00d, it’s also available separately on iTunes. Just search for Get Your Geek Off.
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:30 pm
I finally listened to this episode.
I was rather surprised, shocked, and angered by the attack on Charlie, Dragonpage, and the whole community. I have to admit, I wished I could throw the barbell I was lifting at the Beer Report guys and then call them out to kick their asses.
I have issues with guys like that and I don’t think being nice and tolerant to them is the correct way to go. Nor do I think that them apologizing about their behavior after every-freakin’ episode in which they behave like jackasses is acceptable.
1) They’re bullies. Blame it on the alcohol if you want, but alcohol removes inhibitions. So deep down, they’re bullies. Self-centered childish bullies who slap each other on the back and congratulate themselves on how cool/edgy/bad-boy they are. Sorry, no. Those of us who have grown up have experienced that kind before and we think they’re stupid. Bullies need to be confronted, not tolerated.
2) Apologies mean that they’re not going to do it again. Hell, they know what they’re like when they’re drunk. Yet they presumably choose to repeat this behavior week after week after week. After a while, you realize that they don’t regret their behavior and they’re not going to change. Apologies don’t make up for personal insults and attacks.
I wasn’t so much angry because it was Charlie and Karen and Speaking of Beer were attacked; I was angry because anyone was being personally insulted and attacked. Assumptions were made regarding Charlie and his show and the whole Dragonpage community. I can only assume that similar assumptions are made about anyone whom the hosts of the Beer Report find a little different.
I’m a gamer. I like beer. I can order beer in a bar. I can even attract women. And I can still kick the asses of drunken bullies.
October 3rd, 2006 at 10:23 am
But Barry, to make a mountain out of a molehill (albeit an idiot molehill with a big mouth) is kinda silly. I was totally getting pissed, and had the same thought you did. I’m not a gamer, I can order beer in a bar, my geekiness totally attracts women, and I can totally kick the asses of drunken bullies, but let them make their bed without noticing the pile of shit they drukenly squirted out after a night of listening to Korn and punching 9 year olds whilst wasted….because they will lay in it later.
Or something.
October 3rd, 2006 at 10:25 am
dOOd, its the clit episode. w00t d00d!
October 3rd, 2006 at 10:49 am
Seventy eightsese for show seventy eight!!
October 4th, 2006 at 4:43 am
Jeremy, I’m not suggesting anything over the top like thermonuclear devices at 10 paces. I didn’t advocate any actions at all, just letting off steam.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:59 am
I would just really love to hear Mur’s reaction to that load of verbal diarrhea TBR was spoutin’ about her crew. It’s not bad enough that the show neglects the clit for months, but then they air some pinheads’ ignorant prejudices against the gaming community? Shiite in a sausage factory, that’s simply wrong!
October 4th, 2006 at 7:32 pm
All right, I know I shouldn’t give these losers anymore attention but I was really annoyed by that little clip and decided to go to iTunes and review it.
Wanting to be fair, I actually downloaded their latest podcast and gave it a listen.
It was all I could do to get through it. It was just a complete waste of electrons.
Horrible.
Almost no “beer” discussion at all. Just a couple of guys getting drunk, belligerent and then mean.
You know the guys who, after a few beers always just want to get in a fight with anything that attracts their attention? That’s who these guys are.
That sort of behavior is no fun at a party and even less fun in a podcast.
It quickly became just 40 minutes or so of the “F bomb”.
Woo hoo!
The Wing’n it cast can get drunk and their language can get a bit salty and there is often even a rant or two. The difference though is that with WI it isn’t MEAN SPIRATED!
I suspect that future podcasts from the TBR guys will include -
The Date Rape Cast - “A comical look at the woman who are asking for it and the MEN who give it to them!”
and
The Wife Beater podcast - “Because the bitch deserved it!”
October 7th, 2006 at 7:12 am
I don’t think I’ll ever hear the words ‘Chicken Scissors’ without wincing ever again.
Thanks to Charlie for hilighting some Gluten Free options. I’m a Coeliac myself. However, even before I was diagnosed, I simply couldn’t stand the taste of beer. Some people, yes we are still people, just don’t like beer. I know there will be lot’s of other coeliacs listening who can follow up on your recommendations. We are legion, even if we don’t know it.
October 7th, 2006 at 12:02 pm
Well, I DO “advocate actions”, so I say, hit them where it hurts, with our numbers. Go to iTunes, read the reviews and click the links where it says “was this review helpful yes/no”. The default sort for reviews is “most helpful”. So if you agree with and vote yes on the low rated reviews and disagree with and vote no on the high rated reviews, then the low rated reviews show up on the main page for the podcast.

Speaking of gluten-free, New Grist from Lakefront brewery took gold in this year’s GABF in the #10 Experimental category
