WIPO Broadcast Treaty is a bad idea

Posted in trifle on September 9th, 2006 by Evo Terra

I’ve been watching the debate on the WIPO Broadcast Treaty with the same attitude I have about most politics — sheer apathy. I freely admit it. Politics just seems to go over the same stuff I don’t care about over and over.

But this time I’m scared. And I give a serious amount of shit about the issues at hand. And I need you to help.
The US delegates have brought back some horrible segements to this bill which directly apply to what all of us are doing here in the podosphere. Now I’m no lawyer and I certainly am no international trade delgate. But the conclusions drawn by some people who are much smarter than me have piqued my interest and caused me to take action.

Here’s what I need you to do:

  1. Read the EFF statement about the nasty-bad-juju from this treaty
  2. Take two minutes to send this form to your representitive.

If you don’t live in the states, please find out what you can do to help. This is a world-wide piece of legislation and not only will it probably make it a crime for you to fast forward through the commercials if you Tivo a show, it might sound the death knell for podcasting.

Sorry for the alarmist behavior and the hijacking of the more light nature of this show. But this shit sucks. Please help with the two links above.

Gaming is good for you

Posted in trifle on September 8th, 2006 by Evo Terra

When she’s not drinking and talking dirty to us, Mur writes for a living. She recently wrote for The Escapist, showcasing the power of gaming and gave huge props for our not-dead friend Derek. In the article:

It’s becoming so ubiquitous that the hatred is old hat to us. Don’t allow your kids to play videogames. It deadens their imagination, makes them more violent, exposes them to boobies and ruins their social conditioning with other kids. Don’t allow your kids to play roleplaying games. It’s a gateway drug to the occult, it encourages devil worship, suicide and only losers do it, anyway.

Most gamers are tired of hearing this, so tired they’re numb to the criticisms. But what we don’t hear enough of is the truth of the matter: Gaming is good for you.

Derek didn’t die one year ago to day in about an hour. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and will be calling him soon. Figure he won’t die with me on the phone, right? Cuz I don’t think that even the power of D&D is gonna save his ass twice. Regardless of his modifiers.

Killer Bunnies from DragonCon caught on tape!

Posted in trifle on September 8th, 2006 by Evo Terra

The very cool and very talented Christiana Ellis¹ captured a marathon session of Killer Bunnies recorded from the Podcaster Party Suite at Dragon*Con 2006. Witness the almost-live event and see how we argue over rules, encourage fair and foul play, and generally cus the hell out of Shannon the Noob who kicked everyone’s ass with a single card. Bastard.

¹ - Nina Kimberly the Merciless podiobook, Christiana Talks about Stuff podcast, Hey, Want to Watch a Movie? podcast and probably a few other things I’m forgetting.

Live Streaming from Dragon*Con

Posted in trifle on September 1st, 2006 by Summer Brooks

Okay, here’s the scoop.

We want to stream from Dragon*Con this weekend, specifically “Slice of SciFi” tonight, and “Wingin’ It” tomorrow night.

Problem is, the streaming servers are not up, and I need to change the times when the servers come up. And I don’t have all the server admin email addresses with me.

So, Chris, if you see this, send me an email at kickassmysticninjas.com, and Robin, you too :) Otherwise, if someone else out there has a Shoutcast server that we can use for the next 48 hours. It’d really be nice to have it active so we can broadcast all of the podcasting tracks through Monday.

I do not know if the streams are being recorded yet, but I’ll find that out later. First panel is going on right now… and Intro to Podcasting, with Michael, Evo, Joe, Swoopy (mod), Scott Sigler, and me being sysadmin at the end of the table.

update: Live Feed is feeding. If the servers are up and broadcasting, you are all now listening to all the panels of the Podcasting Track at Dragon*Con. You can find a schedule of panels at the Parsec Awards website.

If the servers are up and not feeding, send me an email… we really want to work out the bugs before the live podcast shows tonight and tomorrow night The live schedule is tentatively:

Slice of SciFi: 10pm Eastern Friday night
Voyage of the Dragon Hearth: 4pm Eastern Saturday afternoon
Adventures of Dr Floyd: 8:30pm Eastern Saturday evening
Can’t Stop the Signal: 10pm Eastern Saturday night
Wingin’ It: 11:30pm Eastern Saturday night

update #2 (9/2, 10:30am Eastern): I’m about to head over and find out of Swoopy managed to talk to someone in IT and get a real feed going. Wish me luck!
