Wingin’ It #81: In Search of female Cialis
Mike, Summer, and Jack, all by themselves.
First Drink of the Day: Punkin Ale, Mead.
- And now for the content-heavy show:
- Dan from Magnum’s has been in a serious car crash. If you would like to donate to Dan’s fund, call 1-866-34 CIGAR (1-866-342-4427). Make sure you specify that you want the donation to go to Dan.
- A Haiku Moment: Attention Authors
- Are you watching Heroes? Don’t listen to Jack, it’s really good. And Ali Larter is hot.
- Are you watching Battlestar Galactica? Listen to Jack, it’s really good.
- Metaphysical differences between humans and cylons: discuss.
- Tee Morris and Phil Rossi in another edition of the Pubcast.
- We need content, people!
- Bionic Woman, BSG style! Mike has a thing for the Bionic Woman, I think.
- The Dresden Files is coming to Scifi. You heard Summer, go read the books.
- Get Your Geek Off: A question from a woman who enjoys the show, but doesn’t make it to the end credits. Or something. I just can’t write down the actual question. Andrea’s right, I am repressed.
- Mike discusses the latest Cialis commercial, you know, the dick pill.
- Deep thought of the week: Email.
- Ian from Cleveland with some forums news. We need a new forums banner, dammit! There’s a contest, and a prize and everything!
Promos:

Ah, sweet Angela. So informative and toast worthy.

Well, Jack is entitled to like whatever he wants. I’m still hoping he’ll change his mind about Heroes.
But Mike: Niki is *not* a little girl.

Here, here. Ditto.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:33 am
Thanks, ditto! I guess Mike was confusing the cheerleader character with the mom in the desert?
What does everyone think about the major SF geeking in this Wingin’ It! ?

and now for a post with actual content (sort of)
BEST WISHES for a speedy recover for Dan from Magnum’s!!!!!
Heros - it’s now made it to my Tivo’s “Season Pass” list but something is not quite gelling. I can’t really put my finger on it. The dialogue has a “graphic novel” feel but somehow the rest of the show doesn’t quite fit that. I’m hooked on it I guess (REALLY like the Japanese guy’s character) but it’s no Firefly/Farscape/Twin Peaks(season 1).
BSG - Now THAT show does gell! I have to admit though. I frequently fast foreword through the long, soap opera-esque “reaction shots” and extended scenes of people looking pensive and moody.
Golf digest vs. AARP - 2 words “Disposable Income”.
AARP targets ALL seniors, from the ones with walkers to the guys having to eat cat food in order to afford their medications.
Golf digest on the other hand, targets “mostly” active, older white guys who (if they can afford to play golf) have disposable income they are willing to spend on “fun”.
FYI – There’s a biopharmaceutical company called Palatin Technologies is that is currently developing a NASAL SPRAY for male AND FEMALE sexual dysfunction. I think they are aiming at a late 2007 FDA approval.
A spray aphrodisiac for women. The clit shall rise again!
er … wait, that doesn’t sound right.

RE: female Cialas
They are called “Roofies,” I believe….

Scifi is fine, you just need to keep the ratio of scifi geekery to dick jokes ratio as even as possible.

That’s Sentia.

So was I the only guy from the UK who thought Tee’s impression of Jack Sparrow on the pubcast section sounded more like David Attenborough (famous for his wildlife documentaries) than Johnny Depp…

I think the reason why “Sexually Enhancing” drugs for women aren’t as well publicized is because certain people don’t want a male to slip the drug to a female. I mean, that’s kind of like rape, isn’t it? Make the female want to have sex more? Maybe against her will?
The reverse isn’t as true because females are generally (and stereotypically) viewed as the one who doesn’t want sex. I think few males would object to getting more action from someone they love.

Hey Mike,
Many thanks for playing the promo for our vampire/goth Masquerade Ball. We appreciate it.

The reason that the adverts for a female ‘Cialis’ disappeared was that your FDA rejected the application from Proctor & Gamble for their drug patch to treat female sexual dysfunction. P&G spent millions advertising the product until the FDA said that there was insufficient evidence that it worked.
The lack of adverts for a treatment for FSD is not (IMHO) a conspiracy against women’s sexuality. It’s because there is, as yet, no proven drug treatment. There are other treatments available but once a safe drug therapy arrives then I’m sure our in-boxes will fill up with ads for it.
As for the Golf Digest ad, as has already been pointed out this is simple demographics. That’s the target audience, that’s where the disposable income is. Marketers will go where there is a market.
Trust me, I’m a doctor!
October 19th, 2006 at 12:38 pm
Oh, and more Sci-Fi geekery for me please!
October 19th, 2006 at 10:12 pm
I don’t trust anyone who says he’s a Doctor. Unless, of course, I’m IN a doctor’s office and the staff there calls him Doctor. Or we’re someplace kinky, role playing. Or maybe he says he’s the Doctor . . . of Luuuuuv.

Cory Doctorow has written a few stories about the whole consciousness-downloading thing, including Truncat and I, Row-Boat. Truncat has the download-other-people’s-consciousness element to it, too. I heard them via his podcast.
October 24th, 2006 at 6:46 am
I’ve actually gotten a little tired of the whole downloading-consciousness thing. I’m not saying that it’s been done to death because there are probably very creative spins on the topic still waiting in the wings. But I just feel as though every other story I read involves posthumans and many of those involve them squirting their minds Hither, Thither, and Yon (3 planets orbiting a binary star system off in the direction of Sagittarius). I’m complaining about overexposure.
It’s one of the reasons I read a lot of older scifi. I’m reading a collected edition of time travel stories by L. Sprague de Camp right now, for example.

Re: Content.
I would love to produce content for the show, but heck, I can’t even make voice mails for the show, even though I have comments about things.
The one suggestion I have might be beer haikus. There’s a site for them (www.beerhaikudaily.com).
at family events
someone always goes too far
last night was it me?
brave beer truck drivers
risk all to keep our pubs stocked
you must carry on
I think that one or two of the best could be read on the air or listeners could make up our own. Would there be interest in that, I wonder.
