By now, you all know that Evo Terra has resigned his position as co-host of Wingin’ It and Slice of SciFi and will no longer be participating in any Far Point Media shows.

We understand and appreciate all of the concerns and anxieties you’ve voiced.

We share them.

This has been a big shock for everyone, including us.

Evo is a talented man, and his contributions to the shows cannot be diminished or forgotten.

Creative individuals are blessed and cursed with their talent. There comes a point where even the best of teams sees a need to part ways. I think it was said on the thread – The Beatles broke up. Martin and Lewis. The list, especially in entertainment, is endless; and yet can be positive because the parting often leads to a very fruitful future for everyone involved.

Despite the shock, we know this is the case here, we’re very much looking forward to Evo’s next endeavor and wish him all the success in the world.

That’s part of being grown-up about these things: accepting change and working toward a positive future for everyone involved.

Far Point Media hasn’t changed. We’re still committed to creating the best shows in podcasting shows that will define podcasting and lead it through the next several generations.

Our line-up continues to grow and change, but our commitment has not. We seek the finest talent and enable them to achieve their fullest potential.

Wingin’ It and Slice of SciFi will continue despite Evo’s departure.

Along with Dragon Page Cover to Cover, these are the shows that started it all. They began with Michael and Evo, and have grown and changed throughout the years, making the transition from terrestrial radio, to satellite and then to podcasts.

They will continue to grow and change, building on the foundation We created.

We here at Farpoint very much appreciate your continued support through this difficult time.

With this announcement coming so quickly on the heels of Joe’s death, your support and well-wishes are greatly appreciated, and makes all the difference for us.

It’s a bright spot in what might otherwise be a dark time, and are something for which none of us can express enough thanks.

Pre-Pool Party activities

All right all you Pool Party screwheads!

Here are the idea for the pre-pool party –

Friday evening will be Irish pub time! We have to prime our livers for the real show on Saturday.

THE CELTIC CURTAIN (3128 E. Cactus Road, northwest corner of Cactus and 32nd). It’s a small bar with good Irish pub fare, Guiness on tap, etc. Shay Veno, a good friend of Mike Stackpole who is very interested in podcasting, will begin playing and singing Irish music at 9 pm.

It’s a nice little pub and the owner has only had it since February. He’s looking to build a clientele, and having folks there to hear Shay will be good for the both of them.

We’re planning on showing up there at 7:30 pm.

So their was talk about golf before the party. Not sure how many folks are interested so we need to hear from everyone. We’ve also might consider doing golf on Sunday instead, so again, let us know what you think.

Evo has left the building

Fans of the show,

I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I’m ceasing my involvement with Wingin’ It! and all other FarPoint properties. This stems from some ill will that had been brewing with the FPM principals towards me and my actions not on WI!, but specifically on SoSF. Oddly (or naively) enough, I didn’t pick up on the vibes and went trucking along as if everything was fine. Guess it wasn’t.

And for an extra special heaping of bad news: I’m not coming to the Pool Party. Yeah, that really sucks and I feel like I’ve let a lot of you down. However, I can’t in good conscious pretend that things are fine when they obviously are not. So drink lots of beer for me and have a great time. Heck, I may even tune into the live feed.

To those of you who tuned in to the Balticon episode of Wingin’ It! or were in the audience — I hope you enjoyed the show and wish it could have been a better exit. But some things in life you just don’t get to chose.

I’ve only just registered for the service more as a social experiment than anything else. You know me. Always trying the new stuff. I know I’ve got my fans and my detractors out there (some guy called me a “dick” the other day. The nerve…), but I figure that — regardless of the tone of some recent segments (coughcoughKarencough) — this is a pretty friendly crowd towards me. But as I say, we shall see…

The most recent Kuato update

Ok, here’s where I’m at.

Just talked to my new surgeon this past Thursday. My case is still a mix of good and bad news.

The GI doc biopsied a piece of the tumor back when I had the endoscopy and colonoscopy in Dec. He came back with a diagnosis of Leiomyosarcoma. Which is very nasty. To be frank, I pretty much thought the game was over, time to move into the mountains and call it quits.

However, the surgeon says that my needle biopsy from WAY back, and the growth of this thing, are a bit inconsistent with Leiomyosarcoma. He believes what when the tumor is removed, we will find a mass that is a high grade sarcoma (which is still bad) that should respond to chemo and radiation (which is good.)

For all practical purposes, this thing is uncurable, but it MAY be manageable. No way to know until it’s taken out.

This surgery is going to be a big deal. Remove as much of the tumor as they can, as well as part of the colon, the small intestine, maybe remove the spleen, and resection the stomach. It will take 3-5 hours. It will be done here in Tucson.

So, that’s where I am. Sorry I haven’t written in a while, but I wanted to have something more significant to say than “still waiting,” though that’s what I’m doing.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to do this, but people have been asking how they can help. As with a lot of things, this whole process has had hidden expenses I wasn’t expecting. Extra tests, doctor and hospital fees, etc. I have insurance, but I will still have large out of pocket expenses do to this. On the right side of the page, you will find a donate button to the “Kill Kuato” fund. If you’d like to help me out, you can’t imagine how much I’d appreciate it.

I want to thank everyone who has emailed, called, and voicemailed, and sent me words of encouragement and advice. You have no idea what it means to me.

Did the laxative on Wed. Went easier than I thought it would after what people told me.

Did the scope on Thursday. Don’t remember a thing. Gooood drugs.

Mass didn’t seem to penetrate the colon, but does invade the duodenum. I guess that’s where the stomach meets the small intestine. Screw it, if you’ve never heard of it, you don’t need it, I say.

The scope couldn’t go in as far as the doctor would’ve liked, due to the size of the tumor pressing against the colon. So, oh joy, I get to do a barium x-ray of the colon next week, to see what might have been missed. I’m going radioactive!

Just to give everybody a idea of what’s up.

I talked to the surgeon this past week, and we decided on a colonoscopy, and based on those results, determine whether to start with surgery, or do chemo first to shrink the mass. I’ll have the colonoscopy on the 21st (these docs are lightning fast, eh?) Won’t know more till then.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who called and emailed in. I haven’t you answered you all individually, but I have read every one and am very greatful for your thoughts, prayers, and advice and support. Really, you have no idea.

What is it that, as a culture, compels us to traumatize those children who are quite obviously, and perhaps rightfully, filled with abject terror at the thought of SATAN CLAWS???

This pictorial does a great job of highlight those precious “captured moments” for many of these kids. Based on this evidence along, I think that St. Nick might be edging out clowns as the “scariest kid theme EVAR”.

This past weekend we went down to Metropolis, IL for a family party with my wife’s family. A lot of them are from down there or just a bit further south in KY or TN. Anyway, you cannot go to Metropolis without stopping to visit the giant Superman statue. At least, I can’t.

Look on the bright side. You could have an uncontrollable compulsion of the Roy Orbison in cling-wrap variety.

Anyway, attached is a picture of wingin’ it with Supes. I also attached a picture of my 2 year old daughter with the statue because she’s so damn cute. BTW, she WANTED to wear that outfit. She’s crazy into superman.

Damned cute. Agreed. You get a pass on your Superman addiction just because of her.

Because I’ve had more than enough this week.

Turns out that Kuato is malignant. So I have one big ass cancer inside me.

Next step, get it out. Then they’ll do more tests on it.

I don’t know when the surgery is, not sure if it’ll be here in Tucson, or in Phoenix. Don’t know what stage, not sure how malignant it is.

I’ll be talking with the surgeon soon to plan the next step.

I’m officially no longer a “target-audience” movie watcher

I’ve seen a few films recently and have found two of the quite forgettable. I also find myself diametrically opposed to the “critics”, which isn’t all that unusual now that I think about it.

The first was Borat, which was regretably unforgettable the way that the amputation of a limb might be unforgettable. Sure, there were plenty of times when I laughed out loud. But at the end of the flick, I was left feeling unsatisfied. And rather unclean. Rotten Tomatoes is currently showing a 92% critical rating on this flick. I think they failed to move the decimal one place to the left.

Next was Stranger Than Fiction, a movie which we saw by default because The Fountain wasn’t playing at the rinky-dink theater in Sedona. What a great movie. No, that bears repeating and restating: I really enjoyed Stranger Than Fiction in a way that I rarely enjoy “mainstream” movies. Funny. Smart. And who knew Will Farrell could act without acting like… Will Farrell? And on this flick, Rotten Tomatoes currently shows a 76% critical rating. When I was a young whipper-snapper, that was a low C. And this movie is anything but average.

Just to keep everyone up to date. I was hoping to find out the results of the biopsy last week. I called the doctor’s office today, and I was told they were still working on it, and the doctor wouldn’t be in until Wednesday. So, at best, I’ll find out something Wednesday or Thursday.

Don’t believe me? I know, I found it hard to swallow as well. However, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Dave’s particular pudding is The Morning Brew Podcast, where David and a special guess discuss three topical issues of the day. The conversation is both smart and smartass, which requires a special skill set. I like to think I have that skill set as well, but David is a true master.

David is smart and funny how I see myself being smart and funny in my head. Maybe I should swap the beer for coffee? Nah… coffee turns me into an irritable asshole. But at any rate, please check out David’s podcast. I personally recommend it.

Ok, where to begin?

About a week or so ago, I could feel a hard lump on the left side of my belly. This past Saturday, I felt a second lump, so I went to the emergency room. I had a CT scan of my abdomen. Turns out I have a tumor. A big one.

How big, you ask? Imagine, if you will, a tumor the size of a baby. We’ll call him Harry. Harry the Tumor Baby has two little eyes to see with, and a cute little mouth with which to speak.

Imagine if you will, little Harry the Tumor Baby turns over while taking a nap, opens his eyes, sees MY tumor, and yells, “God-damn! That’s a big tumor!”

That’s how big my tumor is.

The doctor says it measures 22cm by 25cm by 12 cm. A cantaloupe, he called it.

Since I have virtually no symptoms other than anemia, the doctors let me go, and we’ll do this on an outpatient basis. I’ll have a needle biopsy tomorrow, and should have the results by Wednesday the 22nd. What we do next depends on the results of the biopsy.

There’s good news and bad news about the tumor, so right now I think I’m 50/50 between coming out of this ok, and being fucked.

I’ll keep everybody posted.

Choosing a section to quote was difficult:

After returning from Dragon*Con, I’ve been trying out a few more podcasts than usual. And while all of them are quite cool, I have to give major props to one that I have become hooked on – Tag in the Seam.

Ostensibly for members of the species with internal plumbing, I’m still friggin’ addicted. Leann (comes attached to Clair, dammit) puts out one hell of a show, complete with great production values and overly compelling content. I’m no broad and the show certainly wasn’t designed with me in mind, but DAMN!

Guys, seriously. Subscribe to this show. No, it won’t make you gay. If anything, it’ll make you more attractive to the opposite sex. Unless you are already gay, in which case you will be come more attractive to the same sex. Works either way.

WIPO Broadcast Treaty is a bad idea

I’ve been watching the debate on the WIPO Broadcast Treaty with the same attitude I have about most politics — sheer apathy. I freely admit it. Politics just seems to go over the same stuff I don’t care about over and over.

But this time I’m scared. And I give a serious amount of shit about the issues at hand. And I need you to help.
The US delegates have brought back some horrible segements to this bill which directly apply to what all of us are doing here in the podosphere. Now I’m no lawyer and I certainly am no international trade delgate. But the conclusions drawn by some people who are much smarter than me have piqued my interest and caused me to take action.

Here’s what I need you to do:

If you don’t live in the states, please find out what you can do to help. This is a world-wide piece of legislation and not only will it probably make it a crime for you to fast forward through the commercials if you Tivo a show, it might sound the death knell for podcasting.

Sorry for the alarmist behavior and the hijacking of the more light nature of this show. But this shit sucks. Please help with the two links above.

Live Streaming from Dragon*Con

Okay, here’s the scoop.

We want to stream from Dragon*Con this weekend, specifically “Slice of SciFi” tonight, and “Wingin’ It” tomorrow night.

Problem is, the streaming servers are not up, and I need to change the times when the servers come up. And I don’t have all the server admin email addresses with me.

So, Chris, if you see this, send me an email at kickassmysticninjas.com, and Robin, you too Otherwise, if someone else out there has a Shoutcast server that we can use for the next 48 hours. It’d really be nice to have it active so we can broadcast all of the podcasting tracks through Monday.

I do not know if the streams are being recorded yet, but I’ll find that out later. First panel is going on right now… and Intro to Podcasting, with Michael, Evo, Joe, Swoopy (mod), Scott Sigler, and me being sysadmin at the end of the table.

While the Cards may decide to take a pass, I have absolutely no problem renaming this show Michael & Evo’s Pink Taco. Or the Pink Taco Wingin’t It!. Fuck it. How about just the Pink Taco podcast. And I’ll take half of what the Cards will likely turn down. I’m feeling charitable tonight.

Their first offering is by none other than the master of splatter-fiction in the podosphere, Scott Sigler – author of the podiobooks Earthcore, Ancestor and Infection. This story is called Bag Man:

Hey there. It’s me. Remember me? Yeah, relax. I be in the studio this Saturday, so quit you whining.

I’ve got another idea that I’ve decided to put forth to you, the Rabid Fans, rather than presenting the idea to Mike and the crew. Par for the course, no?

After listening to some back episodes (I’m behind), I noticed that we don’t always do a good job of ’splaining who certain people are and what their association to the show might be. All the Rabid Fans get the references, but nubes most certainly do not. My idea is simple — but the execution will not be: take the audio file and add in some “annotations” when we make any and all references which need some additional information. Don’t go overboard, but add in, in your voice, the data which we missed so that a new person will enjoy the show.

If this works, I’d entertain the idea of creating two different show links, or making some sort of announcement up front that nubes should grab a different file, or at least refer to the reference file if they get lost. Then again, this may be a lark and suck major wind. If so, it dies.

Boing Boing had a post today about two stupid kids getting high by inhaling fumes from and chewing on moth balls. Moth balls? There is a write up in the New England Journal of Medicine (you know you’ve really fucked up when a peer-reviewed article comes out about your moronic antics) and the BBC News is reporting the more stupider of the two with a penchant for eating the tasty treats continued her habit in the hospital, as she was unconvinced that the actions was related to her symptoms.

How many of you play around with Digg.com? It’s a place where you can post a link to a blog post or news article and other folks can come and vote if they think it’s cool or not.

A new service called PopCurrent.com is now available that puts a media spin on this idea. In a nutshell, you find cool media things (like an episode of a podcast, an online movie or a book you are reading) and add it to PopCurrent.com. The rest of the community get to Pop It or Flop It, and everything bounces around to see what’s hot at that given moment in time.

I’m not a voter-type person, probably because I’m too lazy and really don’t give a frog’s fat ass what anyone thinks. But for those less lazy than me, give it a shot. I recently added the Pool Party episode to the system. Lords help us all.

Under a powerful Mayan curse, snakes are hatched inside a young woman, slowly devouring her from within. Her only chance for survival is a powerful shaman who lives across the border. With only hours to live, she jumps on a train headed for Los Angeles. Unfortunately for the passengers aboard, they are now trapped, soon to be victims of these flesh-eating vipers.

This is another film by Eric Forsberg and The Asylum, the same team that brought us the mixed-bag movie Alien Abduction. I’m just waiting for someone to come out with Snakes on a Brain (It’s a romantic comedy. With snakes.)

Well isn’t that a pisser. I took a look around the talk page as indicated above and see valid points on both sides.

I do not want this to turn into a huge pissing match between our fans and those determined to keep Wikipedia pure. For what it’s worth, I think Wikipedia is a great resource. If you agree, and you feel an entry for Wingin’ It! is worth of inclusion, jump on over and try and flesh things out better. Anyone can add to a Wikipedia entry, but crap tends to get edited out quickly.

I’m gunshy of jumping on and editing things myself. But I am more than willing to answer any questions anyone interested in editing the page might have.

Worried about the safety of her family during a stormy Memorial Day trip to the beach, Clara Jean Brown stood in her kitchen and prayed for their safe return as a strong thunderstorm rumbled through Baldwin County, Alabama.

But while she prayed, lightning suddenly exploded, blowing through the linoleum and leaving a blackened area on the concrete. Brown wound up on the floor, dazed and disoriented by the blast but otherwise uninjured. She said ‘Amen’ and the room was engulfed in a huge ball of fire. The 65-year-old Brown said she is blessed to be alive.

And when Kirk fought the Gorn. And I’m a huge fan of the 6 minute fight sequence in They Live. But honestly, unless these guys come out of their corners with frickin’ laser beams on their heads, our opinion of you and your executives will shift away from the BSG/Dr Who good vibes and back to the “what the hell were you thinking” memories of Farscape.

The press release also mentions folks who the media could contact for more information. I wonder if they’d mind hearing from a few thousand fans?

Looks like pressing issues for schools, like inadequate teacher salary, overcrowed classrooms and circa 1962 facilities have been solved in Liberyville, IL.

The [overzealous? underworked?] board of Community High School District 128 voted unanimously on Monday to require that all students participating in extracurricular activities sign a pledge agreeing that evidence of “illegal or inappropriate” behavior posted on the Internet could be grounds for disciplinary action.

An FYI: listening to this show definitely falls under the “inappropriate” banner. I want to know if any of you get detention for this.

Originally slated for an August 18th debut, the antics of Dante and Randall will now punch you in the face on July 21st, 2006.

Elementary, my dear Watson. Kevin Smith is no dummy. He knows he hasn’t got an Asian design major’s chance in Hades going up against the greatest cinematic event the world has ever seen, opening on the same day.

Hey gang. Like many of you, my life is completely crazy and there would be no way I could keep up with all the things if it weren’t for RSS. But I know that a lot of you don’t use the RSS feed for various reasons. Good enough– to each his own.

I’m curious if there would be a call for getting RSS-like updates via email? Not a mailing list per se, but simply a service that notifies you when a new show or a new entry has been made on this website. The system rolls up all the posts made in a day, and sends you an email. That simple.

What the hell? Let’s try it.

A new research project at MIT’s Media Lab aims to turn every cell phone or PDA carrying member of the public into a podcaster, and every mobile device into a virtual podcasting studio.

My first reaction was predictable. Great. Let’s further lower the bar on audio quality for podcasts by using cell phones as microphones. Then it struck me: You crazy people do this every single week on our voice mail show! You’ve scooped MIT, people! Hooray for our side! The geeks just beat the nerds! I’ve used used three exclamation points in a row! Now four! (This is getting out of hand quickly…)

A little over a year ago, I coined the term “podiobook“. A new term has made it’s way into the language of podcasting courtesy of Steve Eley from Escape Pod, the science fiction podcast magazine which you should all be subscribed to already:

PODSTURBATE (v.)
1. To spend inordinate time and/or energy competing for status on sites that matter primarily to other podcasters.
2. To exhort one’s listeners to visit podcast community sites and perform actions to raise one’s personal status.

When he’s not getting struck by cars, Darryl from Austin finds interesting stories and sends them my way. This time it’s an article from the Press Democrat, relating the story of the Lagunitas Breweing Company’s newest ale: Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale.

Alc. 10.1% by Vol. “This beer,” the ever-colorful [brewery founder Tony] Magee said, “I wanted to be a knuckle sandwich. It’s big, it’s bitter and it’s angry. It’s unrepentant, and it’s unforgiven.”

Oh, you know I’m dying to try this stuff! Even better is the report that the name came from a recent drug bust at a Lagunitas tasting event. According to the report, undercover agents spent 8 weeks hanging out at these tasting parties, looking for pot smokers. Their efforts were finally rewarded with a huge bust resulting in the arrests of… wait for it… two people. Thanks for making our streets just that much safer, officers. I can now visit alternative breweries without being subjected to REEFER MADNESS!

Multiple downloads and you hate my guts?

Sorry, man. I’ve done what I assumed would correct the problem. But some of you, like anyone using iPodderX and Juice, are gonna get (or have received) everything all over again. If you care, read more. If not, know that I tried and try not to hate me. At least not for this.

Still here? Techy freaks. Here’s my assumption: in the RSS 2.0 world, there exists a tag called . That stands for Global Unique Identifier and it is supposed to be the “fingerprint” for the media file. In my perfect world, all podcatchers would be evaluating the contents of this tag to determine if a media file is new. If the podcatcher doesn’t have the exact same GUID in it’s history files, then the file must be new. Download it. But if the GUID does exist in the history, it’s not new and should be skipped.

To that end, and quite logical assumption, I busted my hump and Dan’s hump (he’s made the very cool PodPress pluggin) to add the old GUID from the old file to the new system. Open the XML and look at the GUID for the show items. Note how they all say “dragonpage” in them? That’s the EXACT same thing they said when the shows were part of the tDP install.

I’m sure the podcatcher-makers have valid reasons for not simply following GUID files. And I’m sure they do something like checking the

or perhaps the actual file name. That’s a shame, because it means anyone that moves a hosting company or RSS generator is fucked beyond belief.

I don’t know the solution for the problem, only that I tried my level best to not make it happen. I’ve written a Tech Tip and presented it to Podcast411. It simply suggests that everyone, right now, access all of your existing feeds and set them to “download the most recent” file instead of “download all files”. I just recieved every single Seanachi and every single Cory Doctorow podcast on Monday, so I feel your pain. But if you change your settings for podcasts you are already subscribed to, it’ll never happen again. In theory.

Beer un-recommendation

I’ve been a fan of Four Peaks Brewing Company ever since the Highland Games episode of the show a few weeks/months back. In fact, the DarkCon party I attended at LepreCon32 was stocked with a keg of Kilt Lifter, a most excellent brew.

Too bad I can’t say the same thing about their 8th Street Ale. I bougth a sixer of it over a week ago and have just finished the last one tonight. Unispring doesn’t cut it. It’s bitter, but in a skunky way, with little aroma, a harsh mouth feel and no other redeeming qualities.

If your run-in with Four Peaks has been of this variety, I implore you to forget you ever drank the 8th Street, and give the Kilt Lifter a try instead.

Calendar guidelines updated

Andrea posted a great question as a comment and it’s answer was worthy of an entirely new post.

For those of you submitting photos to the Wingin’ It! 2007 calendar, follow these simple guidelines:

Keep your original in large format (300 dpi, and lots of pixels in size)
Send in a “sample” photo of much smaller proprtions (72 dpi and 500 pixels wide or tall)

Your photo can be color, black and white, all funky– you name it. But be sure to keep a high resolution copy on your system. If your image is selected by our highly qualified field of judges, it’s the big one that will go in for the finished produce. We’ll figure a way to get those later.

The other one was interesting… but a little hard on the eyes. This one has three columns, better integration with the other “stuff” word press can do and still has the black background. But the gray text makes it easier to read, IMHO.

I still want to add a custom header image, but am accepting feedback on things. Ah, the joy of PHP and CSS coding.

He’s not only the co-host of the show, but also the guy responsible for making everyone sound so damned good. Joe Murphy

Sweet little Joe from Illinoise awoke to the horrid sound of a twister one morning. After the storm passed, he was deposited in the alien landscape of Arizona and a vague feeling of homesickness. That quickly vanished when we offered him piles and piles of free books. And killer desert when he hits the studio.

When he’s not peering into auditory canals, he’s Kicking Ass like a Mystic Ninja.

Mur Lafferty

Mur is the sheer brilliance behind Geek Fu Action Grip, a regular segment on Wingin’ It! which covers the world of geekdom from a more elevated point of view. If it’s pissing you off, it’s probably pissing off Mur as well, and she’ll be writing an essay about it soon. If she can pull her self away from her toddler for that long.

Relax, all is right with the world. We’ve decided to add a “splash” page to break up the three shows. For the record, I hate splash pages. But since “the Dragon Page” means something very different to potential listeners of With Class to those of Wingin’ It!, we had to make adjusments.

Social networking for parties.

I’ve been half-heartedly following social networkings rise in popularity over the last six months or so. About five weeks ago, some really smart people I listen to (yes, I do think there are smart people out there, perhaps even smarter than I) lifted the conversation to a new level. So now I’m paying attention. And just playing in general.

The coolest thing I’ve seen in the last five minutes is Eventful, a social network for gatherings, events and (as I’ve recently made it) pool parties! Wil Wheaton (biggest one in four counties) turned me on to the site today, and I’ve been playing. Set up my own Performer profile (Evo = Evo, remember) and added a few things to the list.

If you are an event coordinator or involved with any cons, get your arses over to Eventful and sign up. It’s got auto-updating to a bunch of other sites and the interface is pretty intuitive.

New Ways to Interact with Dragon Page Fans

Honestly, it’s starting to get a bit overwhelming. No, really, I’m feeling it. Right here. For real.

First, there was a clamoring to hear “Wingin’ It” via a live stream, in all it’s unedited glory. Skype is handling the load for now, but I have a feeling other solutions will present themselves very soon.

Mike Wills took the lead and started up a Dragon Page Fans mailing list.

And now, to enhance the chatting that goes along with the stream, I’ve decided to forgo the Skype chatroom in favor of something more centralized and easier to use globally. After all, that’s what IRC was created for, right? And everyone can be in there chatting, whether or not a show is being recorded.

For those savvy with the chat networks, there’s a new channel out there. Point your irc client of choice to

and hop into channel

That’s all you need to do. The channel will be there 24/7, and will eventually have a beer fridge bot monitoring the room and taking drink requests (if Chuck sends me the code). Keep in mind, however, that irc tech has evolved on quantum levels since the last time I was a regular user, so if there are any other irc savvy listeners out there, feel free to send me suggestions.

Podcast culling

Oh man… this was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in a long time. About an hour ago, I was subscribed to 116 podcasts. That’s one hundred sixteen podcast feeds. Not including the 10+ text only feeds. Podcasts. Yeah.

Now, that number is down to a ~~more managable~~ number of 70. Still, I’m betting that puts me higher than 95% of the rest of the podcast-aware population. (Note that does not include my cult cast, or the shows Mike and I do together. The seven Podiobooks.com titles to which I’m currently subscribed aren’t factored in either.)

I had to make some hard choices. For example, many shows that I like simply had to go because they were too long. Yeah, I know. Pot. Kettle. I got it. Hey, we’re trying. And no, that doesn’t mean I lost a really good show because it was long. I tossed out the things I don’t listen to on a regular basis and those which ceased to appeal to me. That got me below a hundred. Then the hard part came.

So… when you email me and say “please listen to my show”… have a heart.

Now this is getting silly: SNAKES ON A PLANE:The Roleplaying Game of Personal Discovery, Dire Combat… and Motherfu**ing Snakes

The game begins in the middle of the flight, just before the snakes are released. This is known as the before-goddamned snakes stage, or BGS. During the BGS stage, no one needs to test a stat to do anything. You can go to the bathroom (unless the light’s on), talk to people, have a drink, read a magazine, whatever. Just a perfectly normal flight.

When the SM decides it’s time to release the snakes, then that’s it. The snakes are out. SM: You are encouraged to use as many adjectives as possible to describe how terrifying it is to be in a narrow closed space with two hundred people and twice as many snakes. “Slithering,” “rasping,” “hissing,” “coiling,” and other words will add to the overwhelming environment of snakes on this plane.

Once the snakes have been released, we enter the after-goddamned snakes stage, or AGS. During AGS, every action other than dialogue requires task resolution. If you want to go to the bathroom, roll your Nerve. If you want to punch a flight attendant, roll your Guts. If you want to plead with the cop to save your life, roll your Charm. Everything you could possibly want to do, other than deliver dialogue, requires you to test a trait.

Guest Review: The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks

Covance sent this review in to me today, and I thought I’d share it with you as I also enjoyed the book very much.

The first words that come to mind are speechless and breathtaking. I lose all sense of almost any vocabulary when trying to define the experience while reading The Traveler. The imagery and realism with which Hawks so cunningly captures in his words are profound and exhilarating. This modern day Novel seems impossible; but when all things are considered, it could be very true. Being in a technological career it thrills and scares me all at once to think that this could never happen, or is happening. You hardly have the strength to put the story down once you start reading the pages, but you know you must in order to get at least a little rest.

The chapters are cleverly written in short or medium in size as to not lose the attention of the audience. This fast pace novel at first seems to be all over the world and yet it ties nicely together as the chapters progress further through the story. The Traveler is one of the THE BEST books I have read in my lifetime. It gracefully combines technology, paranoia, and cynicism with traditions old and new. These fit nicely into one premium package Ã The Traveler. Thank you John Twelve Hawks for providing me excitement and fear into my life as I now look over my shoulder to make sure I donÃ•t wind up on camera, in telephone worker van, or worse on a table with metal prongs drilled into my head. Everyone should enjoy these feelings.

Octavia Butler passes

On Saturday, one of my favorite authors passed away. Octavia Butler was 58 years old.

She wrote a different kind of science fiction, and had a knack for bringing issues of social consciousness out and blending them with “what if..” Her last book, Fledgling, was recently released.

A few weeks ago, Mike and I had the pleasure of talking with Octavia. That interview is scheduled to be released in a couple of weeks, which now seems rather… awkward.

CD Audio books to iTunes made easier

A few shows back, I was griping about the complexity of getting CD-based audio books onto my iPod. I’m not stupid or lazy, but the process for podcasts transfers is much easier, and I was… bitching. There. I’ve said it.

Steve from Atlanta heard my rant and offers this solution:

I found this app (Markable by iPodSoft)to combine my CD books so I can put ‘em on my iPod.

I love it and its cheap. No… I dont work for these folks. It’s made audio books on my iPod useful.

It’s only $15 bucks, and if it is as handy as Steve says, well worth the money. Thanks for the link, Steve! (Looks like it’s Windows only, dammit.)

How better to express your love to your fellow human than by hacking into his website and pasting a bunch of fundie schlopp all over the place? It happened today to Scott Sigler’s Ancestor:

We received a long email that said a lot of nasty things, but here is a quote from it to give you an idea of the content:
“You blasphemers are spreading the false scripiture (sic) of evolution, trying to make people think its okay to merge human DNA with animal DNA. Humans are not animals! It is impossible to combine Godly DNA of Man, who was created in God’s image, with the DNA of beasts. God will punish (sic) you. We have destroyed your blog and hopefully your sinful story.”

Scott’s got the site up and running, but he’s lost all the comments– and he gets piles of comments for every episode.

Does anyone other than me find it ironic that people who are so bad at biology and anthropology have a good grasp of computer technology? For most of us, they go hand in hand. Maybe they should look up the definition of “fiction”. Pretty sure it’s out there…

So I’m listening to Mur Laffery’s First Birthday for Geek Fu Action Grip and her friend, Jason Adams of the Random Signal podcast, suddenly says “Your podcasts are so Airwolf!”

So naturally, my curiosity piqued. Was this a reference to one of the coolest action shows from the 80’s starring Jan Michael-Vincent and Ernest Borgnine?

Apparently, yes.

From the blog “Dave’s Long Box” comes a story too silly to be believed, and a concept we all must promote…

In the comments section Dave’s Long Box readers have been discussing using the word “Airwolf” as a universally positive adjective. Rumor has it that back in the day, the producers of the hit TV show Airwolf were smoking crack and they thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if kids started using Airwolf as a synonym for ‘cool?’”

From here, Dave and Jason are beginning a movement. Check out Jason’s Totally Airwolf Army where people are showing the signs of being completely Airwolf!

And you know something — I think this is going to work. When I think of “cool,” Airwolf comes to mind. Cool theme. Cool helicopter. And David Carradine was in an episode so yeah, this show was extremely cool.

Evidence is quickly mounting that indicates a pivotal moment in the Dragon Page Wingin’ It! history was on September 29, 2005. On that date, we were secretly awarded the Best Local Podcast Award (which sounds significantly redundant) by the Phoenix New Times.

So now look at the date of this posting. No, I’m not that big of a lazy bastard, nor have we blown off this accolade. But until Summer stumbled across it a day ago, we had no idea!

So thanks, Phoenix New Times. Though next time, a quick note would be handy. It’s not like our emails are plastered all over the net!

I knew this website when it was an obscure joke site on Yahoo, and this guy turned a hysterical joke into a lucrative business…

…and the founder is getting into PODCASTING!

One of our favorite podcasts, The Area 51 Show, has closed up shop. According to their website:

The AREA 51 SHOW would like to thank all of our dedicated following for their emails and concerns. As of right now, “Team Area51″ cannot create any new episodes due to these disgusting and unfortunate events: First, our goal of finding sponsorship within 6 months was not realized, and the recording studios involved with the show’s production could not continue their hectic schedules without it. Secondly, each of us involved needed to concentrate a little more on “making ends meet”, and could not dedicate the full-time work necessary to make a show like this a reality…

Bitter beer cures cancer

Heh… no way I could get away with writing that as an herbalist, but as a beer drinker and a podcaster, what the hell!

Thanks to Charlies for sending over a story about a scientific study on the effects of a chemical compund found in hops (and therefore hoppy, bitter beer) which has implications in treating cancer.

I’ll keep this post herbal-freakiness free, but suffice to say I am aware of the healing properties of Hops for many things. And now I have one more reason to enjoy my bitter beer.

Mark Forman, the Brooklyn Blues Man, an expatriate from the States living, working and podcasting from Taiwan, interviewed me over the weekend in regards to the impending release (no wait, today is the 7th, and it’s out!) of Podcasting for Dummies.

Mark is also a fan of the shows, genre, eclectic music and exposing the BS which passes for “your own good” in this world. His show, Getting a Leg Up has been in my aggregator for the past three months or so. Good stuff!

PS – If you speak Chinese, pay attention at the end and tell me what Mark said, would you? Trust no one, as Mulder likes to say…

Shownotes as a wiki?

For a lot of you, that title makes your eyes glaze over. It’s OK to hit the delete key right now, or just skip this if you are one of those.

But for those of you keeping your finger on the pulse of the podcasting world, you’ve likely heard about “wiki shownotes”. I’m hoping some of you have been using wiki shownotes, and can give me a solid opinion. If you are one of those, click the link below and let’s talk.

Adam Curry is using a site called ShowNotes.info to host a secondary and much more detailed version of show notes, complete with time stamps, and every single link. It’s a pretty cool little feature, and the guys at ShowNotes.info make it fairly simple to manage.

We already use show notes for our show. We take the script or notes made before the show starts and add them to this site. You’ve seen it. You know what I’m talking about. But with a wiki, things change.

For one, you are in control. You an log in, edit text, make links, add time stamps… anything you want which you feel enhances the show notes. The downside is that anyone can do this. Unsure what happens if some asshole comes along and deletes everything, but it looks like there is a way to go back to a previous version, so I think it’s covered.

I’m OK with using this service, but it only works if people give a turd enough to do the work. This is listener driven stuff. Someone (or someones) has to take the initiative to listen to the show, make notes of exactly what time we talked about something, and edit the page.

If enough of you say “hey, that’s cool”, we’ll give this a shot. But if not, not. It’s no skin off my back. Check out ShowNotes.info to see other podcasters using this service. And let me know…

Although my company is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a few years ago I bought a house in Denver. While I have neither the desire nor inclination to participate in NaNoWriMo (but completely support those that do. Rock on.), I think I might be able to find time in my busy schedule to take on the challenge of NaDruWriNi, or National Drunk Writing Night.

Anyone else feel up to the challenge? If you don’t have a blog, feel free to send us your text and we’ll post them here! And it need not be limited to SF/F. Just write your drunken hearts out! I think I’ll write about being “flippant”…

Dropping dead in your car in Sydney is no excuse for taking up a valuable parking spot. According to this report on Yahoo! News, a man died in his car and received a ticket.

“A traffic warden slapped a parking ticket on a car which had its dead driver slumped at the wheel outside an Australian shopping mall, an official said Friday.”

So, this is a little like china, where they execute you and send the bill for the bullet to your family?

The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy

So what is The Survival Guide all about? This is a podcast that falls between Mur Lafferty and Mike Stackpole. I’m the podcast for new writers with their first title, or with an author who have signed the contract, finished the edits, and are expecting their first box of books to arrive. The Survival Guide is also for the established author who is looking for marketing ideas. This is a podcast of promotional strategies and personal stories that give an inside look at how authors get their works from the publisher’s presses to the hands of the general public.

Barry Bard, friend of the Dragon Page and any other fan of science fiction, fantasy and movies from Phoenix, passed on yesterday after an all-too-short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Barry was a face you could always count on at conventions and events, either handing out passes to movies, putting out movie posters for free, previewing the coming releases, or sticking pins and other forms of tchotske on your person.

An encyclopedic knowledge of rare books and SF trivia, you will be missed, Barry.

Worst SF Movie Ever?

I’m guessing by some of the responses to this week’s Wingin’ It that there are many different opinions out there about what the worst movie truly is.

So, what should we do about that?

First, let’s narrow down our focus.

While Showgirls truly is a horrid endeavor, I really was trying to limit the topic to SF movies, although it didn’t come across that way in the show. Besides, as video expert Randy said in Scream 2, it truly was absolutely terrifying, which makes it a horror flick, and not eligible for the list I had in mind.

Next, we have to disqualify horror flicks. We can have a separate contest for worst horror movie, but that’s for another day.

Now, do we include fantasy films too, or do we get rid of the sword and sorcery and stick to straight science fiction and science fantasy? And do we break this down from worst movie to include categories such as worst scene, worst opening, worst ending, worst dialogue, or stay on point with worst overall SF story project ever committed to film?

You tell me… I’m still mulling over things to talk about on the Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas podcast…

This is so freaking cool! In an article at Space.com, laser cannons are being developed with very ambitious goals.

Not stuff of Scifi, but real working weapons.

“DARPA’s HELLADS (High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System) will be light enough to fit on a fighter jet or drone aircraft, and yet powerful enough to fire a 150 kilowatt beam of energy. Star Wars laser cannon may be closer than you think.”

So the next question is: Where are the space fighter-craft to mount them on?

On a recent episode of Wingin’ It!, I discussed a story idea that came to me. As I’m a non-fic writer and not a writer of fiction, I gave the idea up in the hopes that someone might pickup up the ball and run with it.

I’ve received a few replys so far and am trying to figure out how to get them posted. Daniel Emmery from Brief Glimpses took the bull by the proverbial horns and posted his extension of this idea on his blog. No, it’s not exactly what I envisioned, but I like how he’s dove-tailed my idea into something… larger.

Stop whatever you’re doing, go get your local paper, and find out what time The 40-Year-Old-Virgin is playing at your local theater. Then go see it. I’m not fracking around.

I don’t care if the movie sounds stupid to you. Don’t care if it’s not “your kind” of movie. Don’t care that it’s not scifi, and I’m posting this on the Dragon Page.

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in my life. Not exaggerating. Steve Carell is going to be considered a comedy superstar after this.

I was born and raised in Virginia, not West Virginia as Evo likes to believe, but just Virginia. The real Virginia. The state-where-everything-started Virginia. And while people from the Deep South like to say “You in Yankee Territory…”, I hold my tongue to remind them that I was born and raised in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy.

I liked living in Richmond. To a point. A lot of people have asked me, after noting the history, the beauty, and the “big city with that small town feel” in its people and its manners, why I never went home after graduating from college.

One of my reasons just hit national news this week…

iBook sale creates chaos

Chaos erupted yesterday morning at Richmond International Raceway as people stampeded through the gates in a rush to buy used iBook laptops for $50 each. Mothers clutched their children for protection, people screamed as they were knocked to the ground, a stroller was demolished, cars inched through the crowd.

“I can’t believe people are so barbaric,” said Grace Wang, a rising senior at Henrico County’s Godwin High School.

Anyone want to imagine what the scene would have been if they had been selling used iPods for $10?

A great AMC afternoon…

So I’m trying to get this chapter for Podcasting for Dummies done, but I’m hitting a brick wall. I turn on the television and on AMC I find a pleasant distraction: Dragonslayer. 1981. Walt Disney/Paramount Studios. WOW! I had forgotten what a completely cool movie it was, one of those movies that laid a goose egg at the box office, but on looking at it now you realize how ahead of its time it was and how bad ass it really is. And that dragon…damn!

Following Dragonslayer, AMC’s afternoon at the movies conitnues its streak with Blade Runner, and this was the Blade Runner I liked: The Blade Runner with Harrison Ford’s Bogie-style voiceover.

But here’s my question: What was so wrong with this version? I would so much love to have this-the original theatrical release-on widescreen…but all I can find is the “Director’s Cut” where Ridley Scott added in leftover Legend footage, cut the voiceovers, cut the ending, and said “Well, now it’s clear that Dekard’s a replicant.” It took a few people to explain to me how “clear” this was, and now, kinda sorta, yeah, maybe I can buy that…but I don’t get the whole “unicorm dream” which is vague at best. We see Dekard in his apartment, a fade into the unicorn, and then he’s analyzing the photo. This, along with the origami Adama — er, sorry, Gaff — is creating throughout the film makes Dekard a replicant.

Yeah, Ridley, clear as mud.

Am I in the minority here that the Director’s Cut is not all that? I miss the voiceovers. The voiceovers add to the film’s SciFi Noir aspect that I thought Ridley was going for. The “happy ending” cut…yeah, okay, if you want the “nitty gritty” ending, that’s cool to cut. But lose the voiceover and add in a slo-mo unicorn?

Nah, this is the better Blade Runner I’m watching now.
